Job Summary

Whatcom County seeks an experienced, proven leader to serve as the Environmental Health Manager, providing oversight and development of the Environmental Health Division of the Health Department. This important and highly visible position helps advance public health through leadership and partnerships while planning and directing the efforts of staff to assess, promote and protect the health of the community.

Essential Job Duties include:

  • Advising and carrying out County Executive and County Council direction on environmental health-related matters, programs and services.
  • Managing the Environmental Health division, including financial management, human resource management, planning, policy and program development, efficient use of resources and legal compliance.
  • Developing and managing the division's complex budget including multiple grants and funding sources and strategic recommendations and allocations of budget resources.
  • Working collaboratively within the Health Department's management team to promote and implement the mission of the department to  lead the community in promoting health and preventing disease.

Qualifications

Master’s degree in environmental health, public health; or a related health field

At least 5 years of progressively responsible environmental health experience

This experience must include at least 3 years of supervisory experience.

The ideal candidate will be a visionary leader and have a demonstrated passion for the populations we serve and respect for the inherent strengths of diverse communities and a commitment to equity and diversity.  In addition he or she will demonstrate solid interpersonal and public relations skills and possess advanced experience managing budgets and personnel.  Must have the ability to foster collaboration and work effectively with both public and  political stakeholders to enhance the success of the department and greater community.

Salary

Unrepresented Range 430

Salary range: $89,700 - $116,976 per year.

Negotiable depending on experience.

This position receives annual pay increases to the next step in the associated salary range.

BENEFITS: Whatcom County offers excellent benefits, including medical, dental, and vision coverage for employees and their family, and life insurance coverage for employees.  We offer attractive paid leave provisions, including Paid Time Off and 11 holidays per year, and short- and long-term disability coverage and life insurance for employees.  Employees participate in the Washington State Public Employees Retirement System (PERS), and may select from two deferred compensation programs.  The County provides a match of up to 2% of salary for deferred compensation contributions.
